I was busy in my workshop yesterday (making a scraper plane) when a neighbour came round to ask "if I could give him a hand for ten minutes".

I'm usually happy to help but was annoyed  at being disturbed at a critical point, anyway off I went.

All he needed me to do was to hold his car tailgate open whilst he fitted some new gas struts. As it happened it did not take much more than 10 minutes.

I noticed the inner rods of the old gas struts are very Shiny and thought they might be useful, so I grabbed the dead ones before he put them in the bin.

Back in the 'shop I tried to hacksaw them but the hacksaw wouldn't touch the steel. so out came the angle grinder.

I now have two excellent 10" burnisher rods

Hi, Lurker

How's the plane comming on? remember no photos it never happened

I did do some WIP photos

The finished item is not a thing of beauty

I made several mistakes along the way (it is my first home made plane) and recovered a bit. Learnt hell of a lot, and am confident I can knock out some more.

The f**ker does not work very well and I'm not quite sure why.
So I've put it to one side until I can ask Pete to look at it and tell me where I've gone wrong.
THEN I'll post the pictures warts n all

No photos.......no plane!!! Didn't happen :D

Just as I spent the whole weekend not doing any carving in oak, despite the chippings on the workshop floor.........no photos, no carving!!
