In the blog of the cottage renovation I waxed lyrical about a self-levelling remote controllable laser level that I borrowed. The manufacturer is Spectra aka Trimble.

I needed to use one again and hired one from Travis Perkins. The Datum Duo. The difference between the two is like chalk and cheese. Whereas the Spectra is a joy to use, the Duo is pants.

The laser beam is 8mm wide and so useless for levelling accurately.

You can't use it while it is on charge.

The Duo is £630 so not cheap!

Both Trimble and Leica make Topographical Survey Instruments which use extremely accurate lasers - which probably explains it? :)
