Some above said that fettling old tools is the best way to get to know them and learn woodwork. I don't agree. I started out as a teenager making guitars and with just paper round money I had no choice but to refurbish old tools. I still have them. Old Records in most sizes are in my workshop gathering dust. However, I can also afford the so called "boutique" tools and I think they are nicer to work with for me.
Most planing gets done on the PT. If I am taking off rough stuff in situ, I use an electric planer. Hand planing has its place of course but in practice the one I use most is a Veritas block plane which is always on hand (top notch tool) and LN 5 1/2.
I avoid Norris adjusters as for me trying to do two things at once means one of them isn't done very well.
