Second Hand Plane

I am looking into buying a second hand plane, in particular a no 4 or 5 and a block plane. I have decided to go second hand as i don't have the funds to buy a brand new Veritas or even a quangsheng and i wanted to make sure i have enough funds to buy a decent sharpening kit, i am considering a DMT Diamond stone, course and fine as i think this will be more cost effective in the long run.

Anyway looking at second hand planes, what brands/model would you suggest looking for?

But have a look at this thread: General purpose plane
DMT are very expensive - I'd go for an oil stone Norton IB8 plus one more finer grade.

Ultex/ITS plates when they do that frequent half price discount might be another option.

Looking at buying an older model Stanley or Record, does anyone know where i can find information thats says which models to look for and to avoid?

Record 4 or 5 and 0120 or 9 1/2 ?
Read what you can on this site and elsewhere then you are just going to have to take the plunge and learn by your mistakes I'm afraid!

I posted in the thread Jacob linked to but it went under the radar for the op.
I have a fettled Record 5 that is ready to go. All mated surfaces have been finished and it's sharp and ready to work. Nice plane. if you are interested pm me. Save me posting it in the sale section.
