I know i know youll never get a definitive answer but basically ive been thinking about the different methods of sealing logs.

Wax - Good but i find it a lot of faff and annoying when you drop a heavy log in a tray of melted wax.

Emulsion paint - Easieist by far but how effective is it?

Chestnut products end sealer _ expensive and wax does the same job

PVA Glue - i found this to be very slow drying and sticky and generally not great!

I want to use Wax because i think its probabaly the best but as mentioned it a lot of faf and paint is so much easier!

so whats the difference between the two and what do YOU think the better option is?

the best emulsion paint is vinyl silk's but there not brillant.
a very good end grain sealer is an oil based flexible undercoat or a shellac based primer

but anything you can put on the wood which will reduce moisture loss will help.

I have not found anything to better good old candle wax melted in an old meat dish, been looking for a large secondhand thermostatically controlled electric grill pan for some time but one has not surfaced.

Mind you some logs from early days lavishly coated in a jacobs coat of all the gloss paint leftovers have done well.

I had some porous surface sealer I'd used on spalded brickwork left over - and it seems to work OK (so far!), isn't expensive from B&Q and the like, and the brush is easy to wash in soap and water afterwards ...
