Hi - I just completed a new workbench which has a good quality 25mm plywood top over a frame and edged with some 100mm skirting. I want to coat it with something to seal the top. I have used a ronseal satin varnish on other tops - what benefit would a few coats of shellac give me if any ?

Hi John,
I have found Ronseal Satin to be satisfactory. After some good use a sanding down another couple of coats good as new.

There's a view that using something too thick and 'plasticky' isn't ideal as it tends to make it slippery, and if you have that need tough to plane back in future too. Danish oils are well rated....
