I've just updated the plans for my work table to include a design for a scroll saw stand that lets you work at a much more comfortable height.

Work Table & Scroll Saw Stand.jpg

The whole thing is held together with dowels and glue and is designed to be constructed from 2 x 4 joists and a kitchen worktop.

There's a link to the sketchup plans on my website http://www.seafax.co.uk/index.php?id=worktop-table

It looks very nice and quite substantial. I am intrigued with the stool with just one leg on one side, there is obviously a reason for this so could you enlighten me.

It's not a stool, that's the scroll saw stand, the single leg in the front lets you sit on an ordinary kitchen chair with one leg on either side so you can get really close to your work. I put a couple of castors on the back two legs and lift the front up to pull the scroll saw out when I want to use it. The single leg has a rubber pad on the bottom which is enough to stop it rolling around while you're using it.

and here's me thinking the 3 legged stool was based on a ancient Cumbrian milking stool (we use similar for Haggis milking) I like the idea and also the seperate bench for storing my pies lol 9-)

Ps great idea though

I see the advantage of one leg at the front, but it strikes me as being unstable. A bit like racing the old 3 wheeled Morgan which had two wheels at the front, but you wouldn't dream of racing a Reliant with one wheel at the front. That is, unless you are a sandwich short of a picnic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGULcLUr0I4

I appreciate that instability isn't likely to be much of a problem with a scroll saw and I'm not picking fault, it just doesn't seem 'right' to me.

The Hegner stand (metal and overpriced) has just 3 legs but the rear has the single leg rather than the front, The only advantage I can think of with 3 legs is that it won't wobble if the floor is uneven, however most scroll sawers would easily be able to correct a wobbly 4 legged stand.

I make my stands of heavy construction with 4 legs and unless one owns a really poor quality saw that vibrates wildly I find it is perfectly adequate.
