Hello to all, ever so often when reading posts on here I find that the writing has gone out the side of the screen. Is there a reason for this as it doesent happen all the time only on some posts. I know about the bar at the bottom that allows one to shift the text either way , but surely there must be a way of standardising the script so that it can be read without moveing it forward and back. What am I doing wrong Please. Regards Boysie.

Hi Boysie - probably nothing to do with you at all, normally caused by either wide photo's or long links in a post somewhere on the same page.

Andrew

Hi Boysie. Andrew is correct, it is not you. I don't know if the forum code can be set to hold the window to a full screen, but it would be better if everyone used a thumbnail feature instead of posting full size photo's. Which would also help the post to download quickly, some of these posts with lots of full size photo's can take ages at times. Also if everybody used the BBCode with their long on-line addresses it would also stop the window enlarging and going off screen.

I find it very frustrating when you go to a post and find you have to scroll sidewards to read it properly. In fact I often just move away onto something else, find I can't be bothered with the hassle.

Sorry for going on, but you landed one of my pet hates on forums. :-({|=

Yes Boysie, it's not you who are doing anything wrong and in fact exactly the same thing happens to me with some threads (Probably the same ones you're trying to read :) )

A long time ago I read that you can 're-size' your screen but when you do that all the 'normal' threads will be bunched up and too small to read :!:

As mentioned above it's also one of my pet hates, it may be down to the size of photo I don't know about that since I haven't yet progressed to posting pics.

Like others I might persevere if the thread is really one I want to read, otherwise I'm most likely to just skip it

Tam has highlighted the problem. Using thumbnails instead of full blown images is the answer. He, and others have put up instructions on how to do this in Photobucket but when someone first joins the forum I s'pose they don't know how to do this. Maybe it should be put into the forum rules that only either small images or thumbnails are used in threads or have a sticky right at the top with clear instructions

Pete

Interesting topic, any chance of being able to just add attachments to postings in the not too distant future?. Unless you post pics regularly I do forget from time to time how to do it or more likely its my grey matter isnt what it used to be
Cheers
Steve

Hi Steve.

Good point about 'attachments'.

One or two forums I am on use them instead of having to uploading a photo to a host. Then having to put a link in your post. Also as an attachment the photo is stored on the forum so you don't lose the photo if the host or the member goes.

I would think the only hassle may be the storage space for all the photo's members would be uploading.

I know absolutely nothing about forum software, so don't know if it would be possible for this site, and it would be a lot of work for someone. :(

hassle? clicking on a scroll bar a few times is hassle?

:? Am I going mad? :?

hassle to me is spending an age at the end of a day in a workshop clearing up 15 ton of shavings, when I know I'm going to have to do it again tomorrow! :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x

hassle?

It's no hassle but it's blood with a y on frustrating trying to get the gist of an article or destructions when it's only readable in fragments...

and it's avoidable :p

and I'm most likely to just skip it too

Well I hate sideways scrolling to read posts, so one of the things I do as a MOD is edit long urls to use the short version that the forum supports, that's why some very wide posts contract while you are not looking.
But pictures are much more difficult to sort out.

I've been searching for a phpBB mod to limit display sizes but have only found one that works on sites that are also hosting the pictures, anybody else know of a php mod that controls display size of off-site images? I'm sure Charley would implement it if one can be found.

Thanks to all ,I'm glad its not me that just has this problem as I have enough trouble with what they call broadband that I have to use. It can take upto 1 1/2 mins for a page to download on my PC which is only 6mnts.old the problem is that Broadband is supplyed through the Telephone lines and if the exchange in your area is not enabled tough *****. So I have a device that is used and supplyed by the mobile phone co.s and allows me have B/B for 39 euro P/Mon. I have to depend on a signal fron a mast and if it rains or fog or strong winds it is affected.
So when you people post your pictures I can go and get a cup of tea while it downloads. A 45 second video on youtube can take 3mins.35sec.to view The only reason I still have a PC is I have mellowed in my latter years.I have noticed that our Minister for Post and Telegraphs never visits out to my area,Iwonder why.
Sorry about the long story ,but when you fellows are in bed I'll still be catching up on what you posted to-day. Regards Boysie

I had been looking around also and could only come up with what you have found. The size restrictions only work on a site hosting it own photo's.

Guess the initial restriction in size must be in the upload process.

Think we opened a can of worms wiv' this post.

Although I think an easier alternative could be posting a sticky with the suggestion and how-to of posting thumbnails, and using BBCode on URL's only in posts. Which would solve the whole problem of altering viewing size.
(was Pete's idea using a sticky)

When all is said and done we must lead so mundane lives if a little inconvenience like this gets us going.

I think the main problem is knowing how to post a piccy.
Perhaps there should be a sticky at the top of each page explaining how to do it giving PB as an example:?:
