We have a scooter festival every year in my town. There were about 800 scooters in the Sunday ride this year.

Brings back memories of my first motorised transport, a Lambretta 150 LD. A boon when you lived miles from the nearest shop (or pub).
Rode it one handed for months with a piece of 50lb fishing line tied to the carb when the nipple on the throttle cable came off.

Yes Robbo,

But did you catch anything? Chubb, Dace, Birds (long legged type)?

Phil
Flipping heck. You got some big fish in your neck of the woods if you need 50lb line. I used it for wreck fishing. Ironic really as we are about as far from the sea as you can get.

Why do scooters become mopeds when they are stolen or used in a crime? Does anybody actually ride a moped these days?
Nice office girlies ride scooters. Chavvy criminal yoof ride 'Peds. Just the way it goes.

And yes, there are brand new electric MOtorised PEDal bikes around. They're quite the rage, especially in towns that have their own Boris Bike style scheme, with which the moped sales seemingly compete. Not sure why, although both are quite expensive.

I recall the 1960's NSU quickly moped had a 2 stroke engine. If you put it in gear and pulled the bike backwards the engine would start in reverse. Great fun when you then got someone else to ride it.

Just for info/laughs. Just about ALL the kiddies (boys and girlies) ride mopeds here (Switzerland) once they reach the age of 14 (I think, maybe it's 15) but quite young anyway. Looks real daft with full-face racing type helmets.

And being a crusty old curmudgeon, a "blimming" nuisance they are too - MUCH louder than any "performance" they may have (I think the limit is about 50 cc or less, which probably equates to about 30 Kmph down hills) and a REAL passing problem on small country roads.

But I was young once too, and would have been absolutely delighted to have been able to get my hands on any i.c.-powered vehicle at that young age!

Looks far less daft when you see what happens if a car knocks a rider off at just 15mph and they're wearing an open face lid, though...

Yeah, right! But even more "laughable" when my 82 year old next door neighbour goes to the shops on her "upholstered fortzen" - it's 42 cc 'cos I asked her - she doesn't wear a helmet at all, but she's got an "excuse" ("I was born here and have lived in this village all my life"). :?:

As a lad, I owned a Raleigh moped, a copy of the Mobylette and similar to the NSU. It had two controls, a twist grip throttle and bicicycle type brakes albeit drum brakes. It had an automatic clutch so, to start, you pedalled until the engine caught and then opened the throttle. I took my test on this which involved going round the houses giving the appropriate hand signals whilst being watched by the examiner. I passed first time and was given a motor cycle licence which I still have despite never owning another motorised two wheeler. So, 50 years on, ther's nothing, other than raw fear, that stops me riding a 650 cc bike. The licence also gave me the right to drive a three wheel car like the Reliant Robin. Daft or what!

Mind you, with the automatic clutch, some of my "friends" used to enjoy opening the throttle fully whilst I was standing chatting to them with the engine running and have me trying to catch the machine.

August Bank holiday will see the Isle of Wight International Scooter rally.
The ride out from Ryde is always impressive to watch as it can take 30 minutes for the 5000 + machines to go by and some of the custom paint jobs are amazing.
They are not my thing, but if I'm free I always go and have a look at the park-up and ride out.

There is a subtle difference between 'in use' and 'back in fashion' :)

Brian

Not such a subtle difference Brian!

I guess "renervated" means breathing new life into it? :D

(Not taking the michael really mate, but a somewhat unusual way to spell renovate)! :D

They have started to arrive over here on the Island, little groups pulled over by the side of the road, strings of them spread out along our main and not so main roads.
Confused ones wondering where the hell they are, and we in four wheels hoping not to meet one in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I hope they all have a good time, I'm taking my 1951 Bedford to out local steam extravaganza for the weekend, so may we all have dry weather.
