Utile was used a lot for school benchtops in the 1950s. I have seen other woods used, but don't know what they were. Utile is a sort of mahogany substitute but has difficult grain to work with.

Iroko was timber of choice for chemical lab benches, bastard grain and splinters that irritate the skin along with carcinogenous dust but very tough😂!
