After considering the SIP 14" bandsaw to replace my old broken antique, I was a little dissapointed when I saw it at the Harrogate show. I seems to me it is very plasticky and cheaply made. (Maybe thats because I am used to the heavy gauge steel and huge lumps of cast iron on my old one).

I was however intriged by the new Scheppach Basato 4. It looks very well made, and pretty sexy to boot. (Did I just say that?? Sexy machinery... I need to get out more)

I realise that no-one will have any experience of this particular bandsaw yet, but I would be grateful if you owners of other scheppach models (basato 1,3,5) could let me know what you think of them.

Many Thanks

I have the 5. I think that it was made by Brunel. The main frame is thick (and I mean thick) welded steel plate. Thoroughly solid engineering. Frightens the daylights out of me whenever I use it  It's a beast. It's a thug. It's a monster. It lurks in my workshop - like a malevolent presence. But it does everything I have ever asked of it - flawlessly.

Good to see that the 4 already comes wheeled

The mechanisms inside it (the 5) are pretty flimsy for a bandsaw of that size though. I looked at it when I was searching for a bandsaw and was very underwhelmed by the alloy skinny spoked wheels and the lightweight tensioning mechanism.

I remember being very surprised that the EB looked much better built on the inside, which wasn't what I expected.

I have a SIP 12" and I have been very happy with it as it has also done all that I have thrown at it ( included a finger #-o , luckily just skin ).
I do work for myself and not just diy

The Basato 4 looks pretty good. Just in time for my bandsaw purchase next year. Wouldn't mind seeing it (and a few others) first though. Will have to check the show dates for next year.

Let me know if you get to try one out Slimjim.

Hi

When the Basato 3 came out I purchased one from Rutlands, I could not get the tracking correct no matter what adjustments were made (this was with the help of NMA, who I must say were very helpful). It was replaced by Rutlands, this one did not even work, NMA thought it might be the switch and sent a replacement switch, still did not work, I requested it be uplifted and my money credited back to me. This has been my only experience of German engineering. It took about 2 weeks to get my money back, I had to constantly hasten it. At the time the woodworking press gave it excellent reviews, perhaps I was unlucky and had the two machines which were made on Friday or whatever the German equivalent. However, I must say the Basato 4 does look a nice piece of kit.

For what its worth

Cheers Con
