Scam!

Morning everybody! Received an E-Mail alert this morning informing that my Abbey account has been locked due to unauthorised use, 'to unlock your account...'
I do not have an Abbey account! Don't fall for it anyone.

Get these daily, and also substitute all the other bank/building society names for Abbey and that is the contents of my spam folder every few hours :x

I often read about people getting dozens of spam e-mails a day. The only "spam" I get is the latest offers from Axminster and Screwfix. :lol:

Not sure if this intended to be rhetorical :lol: But here are some ways:

1. Spybots can scan any Web for the "@" symbol anywhere in the text.
The robot automatically pulls your Email address if it is listed on any site.

2. Scanning Usenet postings is another way information collected and compiled into a mailing list.

3. Spammers buy lists from spammers.

4. From various web and paper forms.
Some sites request detail via forms/ guest books and registration forms. Spammers can get addresses from those if the form becomes available on the web. Or the site sells the email list to others

Other ways that spammers can obtain your email include:
- From IRC (Internet Relay Chat) and chat rooms
- The white or yellow pages via a free reverse email lookup or gaining access to a directory.
- AOL profiles
- Web browsers
- Previous email address owner
- Accessing a person's computer via a Trojan virus
- Guessing the address by generating a random sequence of characters

So you may have been lucky so far :lol:

Not a chance Tony. I was doing a Firefox up grade and your post arrived after mine had been sent for some reason.
I scan for viruses frequently but if someone has already got my E-mail address I'm not going to get it back of course.
If somebody paid for my address they are in for a shock.
I'm changing my server next week! :lol:

I get at least 50 a day, luckily my spam filter is very good though I do have a quick look through them just in case something did slip in there. My main email address is the same one I have had since first going online however many years ago that was so I am sure it has been sold loads of time

Worst thing you can ever do is to reply to spam. "Click here to unsubscribe to this email". No, don't. A valid email address, ie, one which actually lands on a PC, is much more valuable than one found somewhere on the web. If you respond you just end up with loads more.

Of course thats just what I tell the wife - it's Spam, not Tool ****! (Got a Festool Special from Axminster this morning.... no discounts on offer though, just free blades :lol: ).

And a warning that you should buy now because a price increase is expected :roll: They are already out of my price range so a future increase is not going to induce me. I would want Norm himself to come and do the cutting if the price goes any higher :shock:

There is also an Austrian mobile phone scam.
You will receive an urgent text message saying ring this number as a parcel is awaiting collection - it's linked to a premium international number!
Just delete it.

Also be careful if you are using Play.com - I got charged for 3 mobile phones ordered by a Mr John Fowler in London. Despite noticing it very quickly and phoning Play and my card company to stop things, I have still been charged for the items - claim now in process.
A search on Google revealed that this is happening a lot with other Play customers so be careful!

You can check for all the scams on this site .... www.hoax-slayer.com and if you get any send them to www.419eater.com, it's a site where they scam the scammers .

There have been many of these messages all linking to premium numbers with ridiculously high charges. You can even get similar scams through the normal post - PDS tried to deliver parcel phone this number etc. If you have not ordered anything or entered any competitions do not reply - just delete. If you do think it appropriate check the number before calling to see if it is premium rate

Private message services such as this site are made as safe as possible, it is unlikely that scammers can gain easy access

The bottom line on anything like this is that we need to apply a little extra care and attention to what we do. Real scams to separate us from our hard earned assets may pray on our greed so if it sounds to good to be true it probably is.

No need to be scared about this sort of thing, scams and cons have been going on for centuries. It just a lot easier with the net and general communications for the scammers as they can target a huge sector of the population of which a small percentage will fall for their tricks.

419 eater is a great site, can't beat scamming the scammers. Also used to enjoy toying with the cold callers and making them hang up before I got caller preference
