Sounds like the blades are not set level to each other. Other posibility is blunt blades.

No I haven't.

What's the easiest way to decide if the blades are blunt? I tried a quick wood-drag test and they seemed to be about the same height but it was a quick looksie.
 
Any possibility that a knife has moved at all? If the problem occurred suddenly it's a possibility, unlikely but not impossible.

Well, without running your finger across them :shock:, you can usually tell be the quality of the finish through the thicknesser (as someone already suggested) or by the sound. If it's making a lot of noise then, the knives are getting dull. This isn't always easy to notice until you've fitted a freshly sharpened set though... :roll: I also look for the finish - try planing a piece of hardwood with a little bit of figuring (something llike sycamore or cherry is good) and offer it up to the light. If it catches the light nicely then, there's still something left on the edges. :)
