Hi all,

I made the supports this morning and wanted to share the method. Tools I used on this pic:

But all you really need is a chisel, a jig and a saw. The chisel plane is lovely to take off the last smoothing cut nothing more. After working with a japanese bench chisel, I find its cheap western counterpart much more comfortable in the palm.

First step is marking and cutting with a dull tenon saw (no Disston either here  ) Then I cut other kerfs in order to facilitate chisel work. The jig is used on the other edge to true the square part of the dent.

So here the steps:

Thanks for the pictures, Marc - very helpful. Thanks also for the excuses to buy even more nifty little planes

Cheers

Thanks, Marc. :D First genuinely sensible use (IMO) I've seen for a chisel plane.

Cheers, Alf

Hmmm, however, in what way is the use of a chisel plane better than a chisel for this operation? Not trying to be awkward, just genuinely interested (as in:- can I now justify getting a chisel plane  ).

Hi all,

I was sooooooo glad to have found a use for this plane, lying around in the toolcabinet now for over two years. It was the reason I pictured this thread... at the beginning. Only then, after grabbing for the western cheap chisel, I realized, I could do the whole job with this ten euro tool. What is IMO the best possible method, doing all with a single tool. It keeps the work flow going. So I will put back the chisel plane and now wait for another great opportunity to find another use.

Marc

p.s.: Yes, it is a LN plane, but I consider buying a bullnose plane, whether old Preston or Record or a new Veritas would mean throwing only half the money out of the window. Those ones can be converted to a chisel plane and have some sensible use.

Steady on, Nick - I didn't say it was better! I just thought it made fractionally more sense than using it to remove glue squeeze out, which seems to be one of the most mentioned uses for one. Still wouldn't say it was a reason for owning one though - sorry.

Cheers, Alf

Oh well, the wallet moths can remain undisturbed for a little longer then. O:)
