Saw doctor or new blade?

I quite often use a CMT 80 tooth fine finish thin kerf blade on my table saw. It gives a beautiful finish. It has been sharpened once before but I am ashamed and embarrassed to say that unfortunately dropped it and 4 teeth have broken.... I do not know of a saw doctor near to me in oxford - so I always take the blades to Oxon Fastenings which is just up the road who then send them out to a saw doctor somewhere in manchester.
So my question is whether you good folks reckon it is worth sharpening my beloved CMT thin kerf blade (price about GBP70 new)which will cost about GBP10 + GBP5 per broken tooth - ie about GBP30 in total - or whether you would ditch it and buy another?

Embed it in a cuddly toy and nail it to the wall.

Other than that, yes it seems like a reasonable price, assuming it'll be good as new once done. Waste not want not etc etc etc.

£30 or £70 - depends if you have money to burn? :wink:

I don't so I'd go with the £30 option.

If you send it directly to a saw doctor it should be cheaper
New tips usually cost around £3.50 each

Thankyou, gasman, for the Oxon Fastenings recommendation! They're also local to me. I've used them for nuts and bolts, but didn't realise they could handle saw fettling - even if by proxy. That solves my saw problem

70 quid for any CMT blade is excessive.
what size and what is the kerf?

as for sharpen and re-tipping @ £30.00......Not cheap but better than 70 quid for new CMT

I can supply new (im guessing the size you use):
250x30 3.2/2.2 Z=80 triple chip for fine finish @ £38.00 + carriage + VAT
250x30 2.4/1.6 Z=80 for thin walled wood @ £49.00 + carriage + VAT

The saw blade I am talking about is this one
http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-...pound-Mitre-and-Fine-Finish-Blades-781522.htm - the 250mm blade item number 300104 which retails on the Axi site at GBP74 and has a 1.7mm kerf. It holds its edge for a long time (unless you drop it on concrete ) and I have been very happy with it.
My question is really whether you reckon a saw doctor will get it as good, or very nearly as good as a new blade.... I am not totally convinced by the one which Oxon Fastenings uses

Any decent saw doctor should be able to get the blade back as good as new (if even better....the grinding wheels they use are often newer than the ones used on production lines)
I am not sure who Oxon F are sending their blades to in Manchester (there's loads of sawdocs around there) but there is a good local firm in Drayton Nr Abingdon.

As soon as i got home I phoned Thames Valley Saw Service in Drayton, Nr Abingdon who were very helpful and will charge £9.76 to sharpen + £2.47 per tooth for the repair - so I will post it to them tomorrow and let you know how I get on - cheers!

I would suggest that rather than post it go round and see them. A local saw doctor should be any woodworker's best friend! They will be able to supply and sharpen all manner of blades and tooling.

My saw doctor is half a mile away from my workshop and 100 yards from my son's school, so I pop in all the time. I kind of assumed that everyone had a similar relationship with a local saw specialist.

Certainly a pro would need that relationship Brad, my various blades don't get enough to use each to warrant that, especially as they're in rotation dependent upon needs. For new tablesaw blades I've found the Freud special prices at shows hard to beat and the cut is superb

So following Brad's earlier advice, this morning I cycled down to Thames Valley Saw Service in Drayton, Abingdon 'on the way' to work (actually a 15 mile detour!) and I chatted to Dave who booked my saw blade in and said he would drop it back to me - very helpful. Then I found out that Oxon Fastenings actually use them as the saw doctors despite telling me they sent the blades to Manchester! Oh and also Oxon Fastenings charge the customer £5 a tooth despite Thames Valley Saws only charging £2.40 a tooth - some mark-up!

Hi Mick.
In my previous employment I dealt with pretty much every saw doctor in the country, so can inform anyone about their local saw doctor.
Southern Counties are one of the best.
If you use them I would be grateful if you told them I recommended them.
No connection but I would like them to buy from me....so far they are rather slow at coming forward.
