I have an Axminster Trade Series AW12BSB2 saw bench and would like to try and use a dado set with it.

Does anyone here have any experience of changing the arbor(?) for a longer one in order to accommodate such a blade?

For the record, I have the engineering skills of a tree stump.

Also I'm pretty sure that there will be plenty who try to dissuade me and suggest other ways of creating grooves etc.

I'm not after advice on creating housings, although I don't mind being told that it's a dumb idea.

I lived in Canada for several years and used such a setup regularly and refuse to accept that it's any less safe than using a normal blade. Standard operator safety etc and common sense always used.

Thanks for reading.

Depending in the diamter of the current arbour, I'm nit familiar with the saw you have, you could have a about extension piece made that screws on to the existing arbour and slips over the existing about to create a solid mounting for the dado set. Such an extension shouldn't be more that say £50 to have made.

Thanks for that Deema.
The current arbor is 30mm.
Presumably you're describing a 'sleeve' type arrangement which would therefore increase my arbor diameter?

I am, the key is to find a reference surface so that the entire arbour runs concentrically when tightened up, just relying on the thread that is used for the nut is not enough, and again without seeing your arbour it's difficult to know if there is a space behind the thread and the start of the arbour that could be used as a reference seat for when you screw on the expansion as an alternative to sleeping the arbour.

Hi Zed. As I am unfamiliar with the British and European saws, I cannot advise on swapping out your arbour. If they are anything like mine though , I'm afraid that it may well be a job that does border on being engineering. As a possibly heretical health and safety sin have you considered a wobble type dado head? While neither as accurate or elegant as the stacked type , one just might fit your present arbour without need of modification.

You'll want to think about how you're going to stop that extension piece unscrewing itself as the motor spins down.

I guess I was wondering how easy it would be to fit a new arbour/arbor to the motor, thus avoiding any worries about concentricity or threads coming undone.
Any ideas anyone?

This thread is a dead ringer for one a long time ago (same replys etc, spooky :) ), wish I could remember who started it. Might be worth a search on here to see what the outcome was.
