Without wanting to sound too conspiracy theorist, given that Rutlands don't publish poor reviews, and that those chisels have no published reviews, I don't think anyone who's bought them likes them.

Can't speak for these chisels but the set of carving chisels I bought from Rutlands were absolute rubbish. They had four good reviews which I based my purchase on. Since joining this forum I now know bad reviews don't get published , I feel this is very reprehensible behavior, I don't know any other retailer who does this. They don't have to use reviews but if they do they should publish them all.
Rant over, sorry to deviate from OPs post

I agree that the lack of any positive reviews tells the story. I can't see these items on sale anywhere else so I wonder if they are only made for Rutlands.

I agree about their review policy. If a company wants to act in that way, I find it impossible to trust them sufficiently to buy from them.

Thanks Gents..

It's tricky for me to decipher all the blurb from truth & read all the opinions made over the years & then be objective.. especially late at night when it's the only time I have to look things up.

I hadn't noticed the lack of bad reviews on Rutlands, which is obvious now it's been pointed out.

I'll check out DS & others.

Thanks again

When I first moved to the UK 3 years ago, I bought a big set of Japanese chisels from Rutlands - there were 10 or 12 of them in a nice little box, and the price seemed pretty good (150/175ish.).

When I got them I had to admit, they certainly LOOKED like chisels. That was about as close to being useful as they came though. They were poorly ground, didn't have anything like flat back*s, had dips, warps as well as twists... and were poorly hardened to boot. I had to remove a startling amount of metal (by hand no less) to get even a pair of them somewhat useful and sharp. of course, one of them was hardened to the point where looking at it made the edge chip... and the other would dull if you used it on anything harder then cheese. Warm cheese.

very warm cheese.

If you need something to open up paint cans, you might consider these. Some of them might not snap in half.

Maybe.

*I mean flat for japanese chisels - discounting the little concave section, which is supposed to be there. :)

Had some cheapish Japanese chisels from them and finish was poor but a good edge once back flattened and sharpened up.

Edit. Oops just seen the dates and the end of the thread
