Router bit, not sure what I need

I've borrowed a router but I need a different bit for it

I want to cut an 8mm groove along the narrow side of some 20mm x 44mm timber so I can insert some panels

I don't know the name of the bits to cut grooves, and where to get one from

I don't want to spend much as I will only be using it a few times and it isn't my router

any ideas where to look?

That is just a straight bit. Trend craftsman range (green coloured) would be fine. I think b&q sell them plus loads of online dealers oh and ebay.

You could also try Axminster Tools if you're near one of their branches.

or a Silverline special from Toolstation. they are not great quality but they will do a few grooves.

i am not saying that they are good cutters in any way, but they do work even if they dont last as long as branded ones.

I could be wrong, but I think jools wants to cut a slot in the 20mm edge of the timber, which would be easier done with a slot cutter ( http://www.rutlands.co.uk/sp+woodworkin ... ornado+tr6 ) than a straight bit.

Undoubtedly - but it's only for a few cuts.

If I didn't have a slot cutter type, I'd clamp a piece of wider timber next to the workpiece, flush to the top edge, for the router base to sit on.(20 mm would be hard to stop the router rocking.) or screw a wide pice of mdf to the fence and use that running on the face of the board for control.

I can't help thinking why your not asking the owner of the router? Then get the right bit unless he has one already then give him the bit as payment for loaning the router, I'm sure that he would rather make sure you knew what you where doing than do yourself or the router damage.

It's not bearing guided so you'd have to setup a fence unless you just go in the full depth

If you can use a straight bit rather than a slot cutter? Try wealdens

seems the straight cutter is easier to get at a decent price, although more of a buggeration factor in actually using it
