I've never used or worked Rosewood myself, Anyone here know what it's like to cut and plane?
Very nice wood though, My B&O Is rosewood, looks really nice.

Very interesting to read the prior thread. Sounds as though seller may have got a lot less than he expected and maybe less than Custard's offer would have been.

Terry.

i was being lazy- i should have linked to the original thread because that is why I mentioned it.

I forgot about it, expecting it rto go for much more. Had I remembered, I would have bid more than the selling price because it was a beautiful piece, the likes of which will probably never be seen again.

The original thread didn't show the unplaned side which had a lot of cracks, that would affect the price I would think.

Also, the final winning price probably would have been £60 less if the winning bidder didn't bid early.

I can't speak for musical instrument makers or restorers, but from a commercial furniture making perspective I think it went for the right price.

The problem is the whopping great shake which is only visible on the reverse side (scroll right through the photographs at the bottom of the Ebay listing and you'll find them right at the end). That was a big disappointment. You won't know how far those shakes extend or how deep they run until you start cutting, but even if they're fairly superficial you still can't slice the board into two 1" flawless book matched boards. Without the shake that board, married to some lesser quality stuff for less visible components, could have yielded a substantial piece of furniture that would have commanded a commensurately substantial price. But the shake means you're left with smaller stuff like occasional tables, the selling price goes right down and, in my experience at least, clients just don't like spectacular woods for smaller, secondary items of furniture as they tend to dominate a room and look a bit unmatched and out of place.

Saw cut veneer? Possibly, but once you're into veneer it's no longer such unique timber, Capital Crispin have jaw dropping rosewoods in stock today, okay you'll pay a higher price but you'll also have the advantage of multiple consecutive leaves, certainty about what you're buying, and the chance to top up the quantity if you subsequently find you need a bit extra.

So for my money that's a fair price for a lovely, but flawed, piece of wood. And you know what, there's always special boards coming to the market! Right now there's genuine Burmese Teak salvaged from the cargo of a shipwreck, a load of salvaged Thai Rosewood in really long lengths, some truly glorious park grown Elm from the grounds of Hollyrood Palace, some of the best tiger oak I've ever seen is currently on the market, I saw some heavily rippled Ovangkol boards last week that I'm thinking about, and I'm hearing rumours that there were some amazing English Walnut finds from the MAC timbers auction.

I was shocked at the low price, since that could make a quite a few £500 + high end boxes.

Then again as I said on the other thread it could be a world of pain if its Brazilian.

Brazilian Rosewood - a Problem?

Great...if you've got "quite a few" clients happily paying £500+ a pop!

When it really gets down to it, I've always found it's quite a bit harder finding paying customers than finding special timbers!

There's a lot of timber up for auction at the ATS/Boddy's liquidation online auction. Nothing as special as the stuff Custard mentions but some good deals I should think. http://bpiauctions.net/event/timber-auction/

So sad that Boddy's have gone, there can't be many woodworkers that haven't ordered from them at one time or another.

I've still got some Brazilian Mahogany in the woodstore carrying Boddy's stickers, if I'd have known that Brazilian Mahogany would disappear from timber yards I'd have ordered a bit more!

Incidentally, I see there's a lot of Wenge in the Boddy's auction. Some knowledgeable timber importers have mentioned that Wenge is now becoming very difficult to source and they're expecting it to join Rio Rosewood, Cuban Mahogany, and eight feet wide Fir boards on the list of woods that our forefathers enjoyed but are no longer available to us!

It's at the ATS depot at Grantham. Honey Pot Lane, Colsterworth, Nr Grantham, NG33 5LT.

Yes it's a pity about Boddys, they were highly respected in the industry. But I have felt in the last few years that they lost their way a bit, the yard always seemed half empty. I thought the ATS take over and move to Brompton in Swale would revitalise them, but then it all went **** up.

A lot of northern hobby woodworkers will miss the Fine Wood and Tool Store, I would recommend British Hardwoods near Keighley for wood, very helpful to the hobby woodworker.

But we're getting bit off piste here!
