which one please

I know it will be ...for what

general purpose but for finishing timber, not plasterboard or anything like that

as a guide I am making a cot at the moment..the sort of stuff I enjoy

Took me a while to work out what ROS was. I kept thinking you'd got Radial Arm Saw wrong!

I've got the Bosch green one circa £90 and it's been very good. However I'm not expert and could tell the difference between the finish from the and a £400 Festool one.

Metabo SXE450? Depends what size you need but when I struggled to sell a Festool this one was always a winner.

i can see the appeal of the mirka..but how much..really
I am wavering on a festool ets 150\3
i will take a look at the metabo
my cheap ryobi has died and i have had 2 bosch green ones in the past both dead

I've got Festool RO DX 90 and love it. Only problem is that no-one else sells 90mm discs so you're stuck with Festools own which ain't cheap.
I've also got a JCB cheapo from B&Q for next to nothing that's also pretty good (125mm)
What this tells us I'm not sure.....

I got a rotex 150 recently , great sander. I had a metabo 450 before but the festool is different class. In rotex mode it eats through stuff like a belt sander

The Mirka is excellent at least 4 mates have one & they are very light to use, I have the ETS 150/5 it is heavier but as most of my sanding doesn't involve holding the weight of the sander it's not a problem.
As usual Festool do some good accessories for their sander, I have the flexible spongy base for contoured pieces & the hard base for flat sanding where I don't want any deviation in the base.

+1 for Mirka.
I've used a friend of mine's extensively (some on my own stuff, and a lot working for him). With the mesh Abranet discs, and hooked up to a dust extractor/hoover there's very little mess, and it's so light and ergonomic, it's the closest I've come to enjoying sanding!

Hope that helps.

I've got the 6" makita ROS and it's great. Clears material quickly, leaves a good finish and when hooked up to my shop vac leaves very little dust of note.

I have the green Bosch one (bought a few weeks ago) and I too find it to be very good. It comes with a catch box with built in filter, which doesn't hold too much, and they charge nearly £10 extra for a extractor adaptor - and you need that because the port is a bizarre round rectangle shape.

I also only paid £45. I think it would be hard to do any better for sub £50...

The bosch is off the list

had so much trouble with their stuff in the past...not to say they are not good now
the Makita BO6030 Random Orbit Sander made it onto my shortlist (if only they made a dust port to fit my vac)

the 150 ets is on the list...lots of money though

I would really like the mirka but which one and then how do you justify for a hobby

The BO6030 is the one I've got and with minimal bodging it hooks up fine to my shop vac :D . I'd highly recommend it for the money.

never had this much trouble choosing a tool....ever

went to axi and had a "feel"

my better half likes to do a lot of the sanding ...strange concept i know

the makita was too heavy

the festool ets 150 was no better
the festool ets 150 ec was the perfect i thought
then i picked up the mirka deros 150 \ 125.............want one ....need one

came home empty handed

Why not let her choose it?

Once you've used a mirka then there is nothing else really. If you need to use it all day it's not an issue weight wise, and the dust extraction is awesome. There are some tools that you have in your workshop that you never regret buying and can't imagine being without and this is one of them. As a hobby woodworker though?

might as well enjoy your hobby
and be in the knowledge that the dust extraction is best for your health
i cant take it with me

I spent years buying cheap tools
I am now nearing 50 and have replaced several power tools in the last 3 months with tools that will last me out I hope
