Roof Repair Question

A customer has asked if I can repair a bit of rotten timber on their roof that the decorators have found, as always it's worse then expected.

The house is an old Victorian vicarage with lots of nice exposed timber detail to the roof but obviously a maintenance nightmare and not been painted for years.

The problem is on one of the gable ends, the purlins protrude through the wall about 350mm carrying an external rafter. The purlins ends are not in good shape, original plan was to splice some bits on but some are too far gone for this.

Thinking I might have to cut them off level with the wall and drill some steel rods in to carry some new ends.

There is some boarding on top of rafters but until the rosemary tiles come off I can't tell if it covers the whole roof or just the overhang.

Anybody done similar before or have any ideas that might help?

I have found in the past that some are just decorative that that do not go through the wall so they can be changed when they rot, have you tried moving it to see if it is actually joined to the purlin the rafter that sits on top might be a ladder with timbers back to the first rafter in the loft to cut back I think you should be cutting further back than 350mm from the rot,
