Hi all. Recently got my Metabo P/T really pleased with it. But, I wanted to plane some long lenghts of 5" timber. I need two roller stands to make life a lot easier, however...
The minimum height I can find is about 670mm. The bed of the thicknesser is only 620mm.
That mean I lose 50 odd mm and can't plane thick timbers.

Does anybody else have this problem?

How else can we get over it?

Mark

Put something under the thicknesser to raise it up?
Shorten the roller stands ?
(Feel like I'm stating the obvious here, and must have missed something.. :? )

Andrew

you are stating the obvious, thats the problem

I don't want to buy a roller stand and cut some off it - that breaks any warrenty should say a weld break. By putting the p/t onto a stand, theorectically makes it unstable or allows it to move.

My "rivals" over the road have a nice old pair that are the right height, but they wont part with them - swines

there must be others surely who have had this problem? The Draper, Metabo, SIP are all the same machine...

HELLPP!

ok why not make a fold down table?

you could make a card table like device that attaches to the
outfeed side of the planer, or even a separate one.

other wise, buy the trestles that lidl often sell, and put a table across
them.

or you can i am sure by the rollers separately and mount them
on a wooden table or frame.

paul

The rollers are the same as those used in roller track, so as Paul says, why not make your own? Industrial surplus places sell them quite cheaply. Up here in the North West we have the famous Wiilliamsons of Oldham - purveyors of ex-Army tat to the masses, er sorry  , military and industrial surplus dealers.

scrit,
remember as the astronaut said "do you realise that our
balls are about to be blown off this earth by something built
by the lowest bidder?"

its only tat when it goes to war, and afterwards it's the
dogs b******s, which they just happen to be able to sell
at a quarter of what we paid for it.

the army has sold off its ex northern ireland landrovers
because they were wrong for iraq, but the indies use
them for close personal protection.

but i do think that building outfeed tables is always a good thing,
because you can make them removeable and adaptable.

Yep! In the seventies I worked for abouit a year for the company which got the contract to build the Apollo/lander navigation computers - Singer...... of sewing machine fame  .

Thanks guys Unfortunetly here in the wild west of wales (37 miles to the nearest B&Q) industrial surplus places don't exist  and I would hazard an educated guess that by the time I bought them, then paid for delivery, the cost would be considerable.

A folding table of some sort may be the answer though, especially if I bought one or two of axminsters bench top height adjustable rollers. Space is at a premium here so a bench type thing is not suitable.

I think the lidl tressles are too high aren't they?

Mark

the ones i have can be turned on their side.

i was in isaac lords to day, they have a sort of upside down
roller item which would fit and they were 9.99 each you'd need two
don't know about postage, but it is an idea.

what about your local post office, have they upgraded yet???

paul

Paul, you've no idea what they were called have you? I did a quick look on their site and couldn't find anything.

The post office. HEE HEE This is 100% true (and any of you who know the Milford Haven area will confirm this). You DO NOT post letters to go locally. You hand deliver. The chances of your letter getting there in any reasonable time is about the same as Rutlands calling you to say your order will be there tomorrow :D

I invoiced my biggest customer (www.locksonline.co.uk) on the 5th of September for work carried out. Today the invoice turned up - after I hand delivered a second copy.
So the only upgrade to the local P.O will be the kettle... :D

sorry forgot to look, will try and figure for you.
as for the post office i meant the ones that they are taking apart,
which i think happens more often in your neck of the woods
than mine.

axminster do something called ball stands,
and what i saw was strips of these balls about 300 wide.
maybe you can ring them and ask,
on the top floor by the big thicknesser , in a bright red box,
they had about 6-10 of them today.

not sure i am happy about their web site, seems lots of what they stock
in the shop is not shown on the site.

hope that helps
paul

I'm never too happy with ball stands for outfeed tables - it just seems too easy to knock work back into the cutters with them.

Scrit

that's why i thought :? the strips on your own table might
make more sense since you could make the approach easier
on the wood coming out of the planer, but that is only my
thought not borne out of practice.

paul

Have you tried UHMW plastic strips? They work pretty well and the 1000 grade is very durable.

Scrit

Scrit, thanks for your PM, only just noticed it! I'll get back to you shortly thanks.

Roger, That is what I want, but most do not go down low enough. The one you have linked to only goes down to 680mm (screwfix cust serv.) so it wont do!

Mark

You could buy the one from Screwfix and cut the legs down as I think it is just held on by a pop revet.
I will have a look to make sure as I have one of them :)

Colin, I think I will end up doing that, but the only trouble is, should say a weld break, there is no come back on the warrenty then. I know they're only cheapish but you know... :?
