I'm thinking of designing a chess set pattern for scrollers based on rock'n'roll. The king is obviously going to be a silhouette of Elvis Presley and I have a few ideas for other pieces, but I'd like to canvass the collective wisdom of the forum :? :) to see if there's a consensus as to what the other major pieces should be.

Perhaps the queen should be a silhouette of Freddie Mercury, but what should represent the knight, bishop and rook?

I find the idea for the king and queen very good. As for the knight Mick Jagger, bishop could be Marvin Gaye and the rock could be Johnny Cash. For the pawns that could be Michiel Jackson he has been kind of a media pawn and moon walking doesn't get you very fast along the board.

Cliff Richard for Bishop. Tommy Lee for the ****, uh, sorry Prawn. ;) Bruce Springsteen for the Knight. Captain Sensible for the Rook (?)

I think it really depends on the target audience. I've personally never heard of Bonn Scott.

If it's for youself or a friend then you want to base it round the rock'n'roll icons of relevance.

Also it really depends on whether their face lends itself to scrolled work.

If it's all about pop icons as apposed to hard core rock'n'roll then you I guess we have to be thinking Madonna, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Queen, The Who, Pink Floyd, Eurythmics, etc

Basically anyone Spitting Image did ;)

James Brown - self styled godfather of Soul for the Bishop.

Its a difficult one since to recognise a performer from a silhouette really limits your choices. Who would you recognise at the size of a chess piece in this form? If you are not limited to people, then symbology may be better - a guitar, or the prism from Pink Floyds Dark side of the moon, glasses for Elton John, a treble clef, a musical note for pawns etc.

For famous faces I can only think of Elvis, James Brown's hair, Freddie Mercury with his arm up containing a short microphone stand, Madonna in her pointy bra and possibly Michael Jackson in his fedora. If your board is big perhaps Barry White, the walrus of loooove! How to scroll those as chess pieces would be beyond me though!

Steve.

I think Mark Knopfler playing his guitar could justify a place, but I'm not sure which piece he would be best suited to.
You'd have to get the headband in!

Malc :D

Great ideas, guys, but if they're going to be musicians they'll need to have instantly recognisable silhouettes. Presley and Mercury both struck poses which were iconic and instantly recognisable. Would people recognise Mick Jagger strutting? Perhaps - it's something to work on :) .

Like Steve, I'm wondering if some symbols might be used too, such as an electric guitar; something associated with rock.
