And very nice too. Gives me that impetus needed to give it a go myself - or to read the book again at least.
I bought a Workzone powerfile type tool from Aldi for about £30. Seems to work well although hasn't yet had much use. Surprisingly aggressive wood removal. I suppose thd Makita ones would stay the course if you intend regular use.

*UPDATE*
Got my plans through the post now and have come to the next problem in making my rocking horse!

I photocopied the plans so that I could cut all of the pieces out separately but I wasn't quite able to match the pieces up properly.
The plans say to use carbon paper to copy the plans onto cardboard or MDF to make templates out of.
I've looked up carbon paper and can only seem to get hold of it in sheets?
This is fine but obviously I'd have to muck around with sticking all the bits together again!
Does anybody know if you can get a hold of carbon paper in a roll, or whether I should just try sheets?
Thanks!
Becky

Not sure if the principle is the same, but a friend made a rocking horse and I made a at, using ply. The whole point about using ply was that you could see the shape that the ply layers made, and so keep cutting in 3D until the layers were showing the right curvature. its like seeing a map with height elevations on it. yes, you could cut slides out that were the same as the elevations on the map. or if your wood was ply, you could cut away wood until the ply layers showed the same elevation rings.
Doing it out of 'solid' wood, would be considerably harder.

Place the plans on the wood and transfer the outline with an automatic centre punch.
A nail and light hammer also work.

Have fun, xy
