ripples after veneering

I just unclamped my first veneered panel and to my annoyance there was a large ripple running down the panel. Not sure how this happened as the veneer was flat when I bonded it to the substrate.

What can you do in these circumstances. I probably was a little hasty and decided to sand the veneer off ready for attempt number 2.

Any pointers would be most welcome.

Hi the ripples can be caused by a number of factors. Uneven pressure is probably the most likely if using cauls. Its also possible that if you had a heavy spread of glue this could cause it as well due to the veneer expanding with the moisture in the glue its best to have a thin even layer of glue applied with a roller if using pva, leaving it for a few mins for the excess water to evaporate off can be usefull too. Was the veneer flat when you started?

If its a small ripple you could try to split the veneer with a knife and apply some glue and repress or sometimes a iron on a lowish heat can be used to iron out the ripples if not too severe.

Thanks. Having taken the veneer off I could see that the PVA had not gone off where the ripple was. I suspect the issue was that the moisture in the glue caused the veneer to expand resulting in the ripple.

I will try again tomorrow, but leave the veneer clamped for longer that I did today. On second thoughts I think I will wait unti the veneer glue I ordered turns up rather than using PVA.
