Im looking into making a ring to fit on a finger.

Do i need a big lathe for this? Im hopingi can make it on my normal lathe.

If its possible how does one go about making said ring?

Cheers all

You can make it on any lathe as long as it can hold the wood. Easiest way is to make the outside shape on a spindle, bore out the inside slightly longer than you want it to be in width and clean the inside up to the desired size for the finger then part of shaping as much as possibble. You can then jam chuck if needed to finalse the shape of the parted off side, sand off, polish etc.

Hope this helps

I'd maybe suggest ... make it like you would as a captive ring on a goblet stem.. then junk the goblet !

Sounds a bit brutal, but the rings come out well.. its a thought !

( Obviously.. the 'principal' is whats involved .. don't actually 'make a goblet' .. just a spindle turning with the ring. )

Hi

I turn a cylinder, then bore it slightly undersize with an auger or forstner bit in the tailstock , then sand and finish the inside, then part off and finish the outside on a tapered wooden mandrel. Works for me.

Hi Alie,

I've made quite a few rings over the years, I drill a 16mm hole through whatever size block you are using and then as Pete said use a tapered wooden mandrel, this is fine for plain round rings but people were asking for dress style rings where I would again drill the desired finger hole then shape it with the belt sander, making sure you have thick gloves on, this way you can maximise the design or figure of the timber you are using.
Regards Chris.
