Anyone on here have any experience making rifle stocks? I am keen to have a crack at one but not sure where to start. Ideally would like to make a laminate one but don't have a clue on where to even buy blanks from.

any help or advice is greatly welcome.

No experience of making from new, but just some experience of adjusting existing - which ain't easy f you want a good looking result. I take you have a rifle to fit to the stock?
Laminate stocks that I have seen are made with very high quality plies.

All the best..

just type rifle stock in the search bar at the top of the page. Many threads on the subject

I've made a few for CO2 rifles. for laminate blanks, I used baltic birch and glued them up, it was 3 pieces of 22mm. I got a very nice chuck of beech and a chunk of birch for the others, 6x3" from the local timber yard (atlantic timbers), the lower of the stock and the horn where made from the waste to give more drop. worst part is channeling for the breach, there isn't much room to stand a router and 1" ball end bits are pretty scary. the rest is all rasps, spoke shaves and sharp chisels once the shape is cut out.

have a look on chinese air rifles (google it), there are a few that make them on a routine basis.

You can find gun stock blanks on Ebay,

Or I'll sell you a 56mm thick, heavily rippled Black Walnut solid gun stock blank for £100, taken from boards like this,

Normally I cut these boards for veneer, here's what they look like,

Or if you prefer English Walnut,

Custard! stop posting wood ****!  :D

that walnut is gorgeous but i want to use laminate - ideally the black pepper laminate. I have Several Air Rifles and I have a specialty target stock on order from a Guy called Warren Edwards (http://www.warrenedwards.co.uk/) for my TX200 but I also have a BSA R10 that i quite fancy having a better fitted stock for it but cant justify the £500 plus it will cost me.

Given the gun will be dragged through woodland and fields i don't really want to use high end walnut although i am tempted but Custards offer for a future project (once i know what i am doing)

I don't currently have a band saw so is this something that is a must have as i have read a few posts around the web that seem to use band saws heavily.

a bandsaw will only speed up the process. I did all of mine with hand tools. short of laying up your own laminates your going to be paying through the nose for any blank you purchase. there is a reason why the R10 stock costs so much, even with a bandsaw the finishing work to get a nice stock is still very labour intensive.

You can buy multicoloured ply for making stocks in the USA. I've seen a few stocks made with this stuff over here so it must be available somewhere. I made a stock many years ago using compressed beech ply called Delignit. I got it from this company:

http://www.ltlewis.co.uk

It's far better than even the best birch ply with no voids in it. The only problem is they may want you to buy a full sheet! Luckily for me they gave me a stock size off cut for nothing. :D

One of the most difficult aspects of stock making is accurate inletting. An overhead router may be useful if you plan to make more than one. Good luck.

If anyone has the not inconsiderable woodworking skills required to accurately shape and checker a gun stock, then I can't see why making a laminated blank would be a problem. Or am I missing something?

agreed custard, although figuring out the best dyes to use to get lots of pretty colours in the laminates is the most time consuming. :)

I laminated my own blank for the pistol grip of my last project.

Laminating a large block for a full stock may be a bit more tricky though.

What exactly are you after? A blank piece of laminated ply, a gun stoked shaped piece of wood, or a laminated gun stock, if the later what gun? I can help with any of these.
