I have just dug out this photo for another reason and thought it might amuse folk here.

It was presented to me in recognition of my rather pragmatic approach in the the workplace in order to achieve customer requirements rather than slavish adherence to Company process.

It also reminds me that I escaped virtually two years ago

My 'Promised Land' is getting very close now, hopefully, fingers crossed, in late Sept this year (if Plan A goes ahead :-" [-o<) - Rob

What did you use to do bob?

I spent 33 and a bit years in electronics applied research especially in special purpose communication systems.
About the only thing I did most people would have been aware of was with many many others devising what turned into the dreaded mobile phone system, GSM in 1987.

Let's drink a toast to plan A. At this stage you probably think that it'll give you endless time to spend in the workshop and you'll have time to do everything you want to do. Let me assure you that's not the way it works. I've never been busier and am still having to choose between various things I want or need to do!

Yes Promised Land indeed! Thanks to a good pension scheme, there are still pay days every month and yet i don't have to go to work!
Even better, I can still pop in every now and then (such as today) to use the workshop facilities for a bit of sheet metal work.

Here's hoping that your Plan A stays on track Rob. I can't imagine you regretting the decision.

I've got quite a long list of things I want to do but the beauty of it is that none are urgent and there is no mad dash to finish something by Sunday evening ready to back to work on Monday. In fact there is a fair chance that I have to think quite hard which day of the week it is!

Wonderful!

Now that rings a bell somewhere.

You are (partly) responsible for turning an entire generation into a bunch of mindless zombies who walk around doing nothing but stare at their stupid phones wondering why no-one has called them in the last 5 minutes.
Then when someone finally does call them they have left the bloody thing on their desk to ring in some ever-so-amusing tone while they are away.

Enjoy your retirement :-D

Erm - sorry about that. We only did what we were paid to do not thinking that it would actually take off.
At the time, we engineers could not understand how these phones would justify the investment. We could understand that business people would use them but had absolutely no idea how popular they would become.
As for text messaging - we needed part of the message to accommodate short packets of data along with the voice to convey engineering information mainly to do with call set up. The rest of the time these data slots would be largely redundant once a call was in progress.
Some bright spark came up with the idea to carry short customer messages in these slots which would cost nothing extra.
Text messages were born - Scary!

Yep, that's the plan at the moment Rog. Along with a 'few' :-" others, I've opted for the Early Release Scheme from the MOD so with any luck it's going to happen, particularyl as they'll need to shed around 15000 bodies over the next three years. Apart from some decorating, SWIMBO hasn't got too much allocated, but I dare say that will be a rapidly chaging WIP  - Rob

I hope your plans pan out for you Rob. As for the mobile phones it is just another fad like digital watches in the late seventies they were everyones must have back then too. LOL.
