Restoring Ash

I have some ash veneer that is probably about 20 years old and has taken on a slightly grey colouring. Is there any way of restoring it to its original light colour. It will be used on a shelf with solid ash edging so if possible I would like to get a fairly consistent colouring between all pieces.

Sounds like a job for a bleach. There are three basic kinds in ordinary woodworking:-

1. Chlorine based (like kitchen stuff but stronger)
2. Oxalic acid
3. Two part (Sodium Hydroxide and Hydrogen peroxide)

I have no experience with (1). (2) is used for eg removing black marks from oak that has been stained by wet iron. (3) is used mainly for removing native colour from wood - eg the red from mahogany.

I suggest you try oxalic acid then if that doesn't work go to the two part stuff.
