Sorted out some rod and tubing from my modelrailway days.

I want to make some hinged boxes using the tube and rod on the lid to side carcass.

Can anyone please direct me to their web links on boxes using this working method

if you do a search there was a thread not long ago (last month?) about making wooden hinges with a rod through them as a pivot - might this help?

Thisone has a couple of short brass rods as pivots, same with this one, just make a jig to get the holes in the box sides and lid in the same place.

Have you watched the DVD by Rob Cosman "Box Making" it shows how to use dowels with metal rod between the dowels. You will be amazed at how they look as you make the dowel from the wood you used to make the box sides. hard to explain but you have to see the dvd.

He cuts the home made dowel into equal pieces and glues every other one to the lid and the other ones to the box, he uses superglue to glue the box sides and the lid together.

He sells a little jig for drilling holes dead centre in the dowel.

See if you can buy the dvd you will not be disappointed.

Classic Hand tools sell the dowel jig and the Dvd

Check it OUT

Now, that's spooky!

I've been considering this very thing in my garage tonight!

I decided not to, but the principle I came up with is (correct my if I'm wrong):-

interlocked 'fingers' glued to the box (slight gap between for ease of movement). Say, for ease, 4 on the top, 3 on the bottom. All with holes through (this hole is in line with the top of the bottom / bottom of the lid - but could be anywhere). Put your rod in the holes - hey presto! 2 more fingers on the bottom, without holes, hides th rod...

Any improvements / comments?

Thanks all for your replies, found a trailer of Rob Cosman hinge system

Also Jason I like the 2nd box, I think I have still got a piece of spalted sycamore, so watch this space as they say.

Martin how did you make the tails of your hinges or create the the dowell end, is each section constructed from one piece?

Tried to pick up some magnet discs yesterday from Ebay (£3.99) cheap enough but I do not want or have a Paypal account and they would not take visa cc.

John, basically it is a 3/8" box joint then rounded over with a 3/8" half round router cutter, the remainder of the stock is then reduced to 3/16" so they'll both marry together, finally they are drilled with this jig made by jointech.

I just used homemade dowels for the pin but tube would have done.

Strangely, I have just given away another ribbed box with two Viagra tablets enclosed (aspirin tablets) to a neighbour for his 65 birthday yesterday.
