Hello,

I wonder if anyone here can help? I have just been given an old variable speed Jet lathe (rebadged as Woodwise) model number PW15-90 and dated 1982 on the motor information plate. It is in reasonably good condition and now I've cleaned it up appears to be working okay, but on inspection the belt seems a little worn & I would like to replace it. Any ideas as to where I can get a replacement belt for this lathe?

I've tried doing an internet search on the make & model and found no references to this lathe at all. As a really long shot, does anyone have any information on this lathe - a copy of the users manual would be really nice to find!

It came with a multistar duplex chuck, and (I think) most of the bits of two sets of jaws & a variform screwchuck, but no manual for the chuck & I'm a bit confused about how to put some of the bits together, so would like to find a manual for he chuck as well.

The lathe came with some Crown & Marples turning gouges - which all need a lot of attention and sharpening - my partner has got the roughing gouge a a couple of the others into usuable states so far.

I'm a complete novice to wood turning, but in the last couple of days have managed to make a few tool handles - satisfactory in that they fit the intended tools nicely but the finish was not so good - I need a lot more practice (esp with the skew!)

Regards

Hi,

That is a Poolewood 1590 lathe and the belts are available from Poolewood Machinery
Tel:- 01622-884651 The part Number is 159013 Price £9.95 plus postage

Regards Terry

That sounds expensive for what should be a standard vee belt

Is there a number on the belt you can tell me and roughly how wide it is at the top of the belt and I'll see if I can find you a price.

Thanks for the offer, Bob, but I got a belt from Poolewood as I wanted to ask them if they had a manual for the lathe in any case - which they did - and sent me a copy for free - thanks to Terry at Poolewood :)

I'm a complete beginner at woodturning & recently got the DVD "Turning Wood with Richard Raffan" - he makes it look *so* easy - after watching it I was left feeling rather inadequate! But it must have done me some good as the coves & beads I tried after watching it were so much better than before, and I even managed to (briefly) use the skew without another dig-in! I'm still not confident enough to run my lathe anywhere near as fast as he does, though.

Lots more practise is obviously required on my part. Thankfully we have access to a huge pile of firewood. Yesterday my partner helped the local farmer move another load of felled wood and he came back with some nice pieces of cherry, chestnut and hawthorne for me. I've sealed the ends and stacked them for seasoning in a shed. I did reduce one of the bits of cherry to a neat cylinder blank on the lathe first, just to see how it would cut. It cut very well but gently sprayed me with sap and covered me in long soggy shavings!
