I've been trying to freehand sharpen a set of cheap narex hand carving tools, I've been struggling to remove the wire edge from the flat grind side. I had used a strip of stiff leather which helped but had a variable result along the edge.
I used various size nails to give more consistency to the leather
but then I found I could use copper pipe crushed to fit the radius of the specific tool and then coat it with abrasive paste. this seems to work the best,
