My Record bs 400 bandsaw stopped working today still under warranty so phone them up and they will send me a new switch .Although i press the switch in and you can hear it trying to start i think it might be the motor my self any idea's
Alan

Sounds like the start capacitor, in an ideal world I would say to switch it on the "help the motor start" but its not the safests so if you decide to do it please be careful.

Matt

How old is it?

If its not brand new it will most likely be the capacitor.You can check that ;
With the switch in the OFF position,
open the door and spin the wheel hard. Quickly close and lock the door and while the blade is still rolling, then press the start switch. If the thing runs, its the capacitor. If it doesnt, then its most likely the switch

Ok the saw will be about 3 year old now and i have tried spinning the wheel on the saw and closing the door but can not get the speed up enough as when i close the door it stopped should have had three shredded wheat lol .
Should have the new switch Mon or tue so we will go from there thank's Mock

I am very surprised you have that much resistance on the wheels, that blade should run for several seconds after spinning those big wheels.
try loosening off the drive belt and spinning again. Take the blade off and spin each wheel. Those iron wheels should spin for ages. If you have a seized bearing on one wheel that will be enough to stop the motor.
Or if they both spin free then suspect the motor bearings.
I'm betting against the switch solving the problem

It's likely to be the motor brake causing the resistance. As you said, this can be checked by reducing the drive belt tension and spinning the wheels.

AH, I did not know the motor was braked. I learn more everyday. Somedays even more than I forget.

Just a quick update on the record bs 400 bandsaw stopped working .Well i have had the new switch fitted and i am happy to say it work's lol happy days

Glad its solved, but amazed its the switch. NVR switches almost always fail totally.
You said you could hear it trying to start, but did you just hear faint humming from the switch, rather than from the motor?

Alls well that ends well.
Just a point on spinning the wheel though, I believe it can only be done without the blade being fitted. Am I right on that?
Malcolm

Malcolm, yes, I did not know that the record motor has a brake when I gave my first advice. The drive belt could be removed to check both wheels and blade alignment / rubbing, or the blade removed and the top wheel checked seperately.
My axminster 350 does not have a braked motor.

I have a BS 500 which had two replacement switches. After fitting the second one Ifound that there was a small hole in the top of the switch which allowed it to fill up with dust and stop it working. Tapping the switch gently while holding it upside down soon made a pile of saw dust. I taped over the hole in the second switch and it's still working more than five years later.

Now that sounds like the answer that would explain the noise. The small coil inside the switch would still be humming trying to make contact. Wheras if that coil winding failed the switch would be silent.
Filed for future use.

Bloody jink's bandsaw gone again this time it sparked and tripped every thing time for record to come on down and have a look

Can't get a motor until mid November so arranged for them to come and investigate November and fetch a new motor and switch just in case :( :(
