I'm trying to decide on a few vintage Record planes, what are people's opinions on the importance of Stay Set and the Crucible steel blades?

Crucible steel blades are good. Stay set are OK but not an essential. Some have rosewood handles and I would want those.

Thanks Johnny, that helps except the one with stay set has a normal blade but good rosewood handles

Finding all four seems to be difficult, I found a no5 with solid frog, stay set and rosewood handles.

I also have a record stay set. Out of the four requirements mentioned I would ditch the stay set. It's nice just not a deal breaker and commands higher prices.

Clico and Record (CS88 with the casting fault behind the mouth scraped out) SS here, would opt for SS over RW handles. For irons, the thin laminated CS iron is a dream, otherwise I do like the heavy pre-Garlick O1 from Clico (Mike must be turning in his grave)

If you're looking on ebay be sure to also search for No5 planes. The more expensive No5 1/2 sometimes get mislabled in the description and you can sometimes get a great price.
