Hi All,

Have any of you kind guys and experience of use a Thien type dust separator with the Record DX5000 shop vac and if so do you consider it worth doing and does it works well.

Regards

Matthew

HI,

I have 2x. DX4000s both of which have Thien separators. The DX4000 is the floor standing version of the DX5000. They work well, took a bit of tuning 're the height of the central pipe in the separator, and I built one with a lexan wall to see what was happening and wish I had built both like this.

Both are now enclosed in sound deadening cases as the Record detractors are loud as in very, very loud.

Future changes include an upgrade to a cyclone for one system but that is at least 6m away.

I have come to believe that these day approaches to dust collection are better than bought systems which should be relegated to simply being the provider of the needed package. I am experimenting with a self built 16 inch impeller cyclone as well.

Thanks for the reply Beech1948,when you say a "lean wall" can you explain what you mean also what type of box did you make for the sound deadening? Thanks

Matthew

Hi,

"lean wall" was produced by my phones predictive text...god da*n it.

It should read Lexan wall around the seperator...sorry about that.

The sound deadening boxes were made from ply and look like DC carts with Dx4000 on the bottom and the separator on the top with castors underneath. Sound deadening was provided by a friend who had some foam offcuts which really kill the sound levels. Don't know what its called.

Thanks Beech1948.You say you had a problem with the length of the centre pipe presumably you find that fairy critical which is interesting as I have been unsure what difference that makes.

Can I ask what width your drop slot around the edge is,I made mine 35mm but am finding some shavings from particularly my Planner/thicknesser do not go through but I don't want to widen the slot too much as I think this effects the strength of the cyclone. What are your thoughts?

Phil Theins plans show a drop slot of 1.125 inches (1 1/8"). I accidentally cut my first one to 1.25 inches. In performance this shows no problems compared to the second drop box which had a 1.125" drop slot.

The issue with my outlet pipe was simply that I had it too low down and needed to raise it up a little for maximum airflow.
