AH! Well...you see...it's like this...I parted company with two of the three and bought one...so that makes me a lapsed collector....doesn't it!?

What happened was....Douglas brought around his No.77A....and I was quite impressed. In fact...it is really well made...so I thought I would treat myself to a dip into FleaBay...and I think I got rather a bargain...

Not of bootfair bargain proportions but a bargain none the less.

Jim

Ah just 2 then barely a collector at all :) I went for a Preston just waiting to find out how tiny the chip is.

Well done Jim - I do most certainly rate mine. really nicely made and an excellent performer. I know it's a bit niche, but at those prices it is a mighty fine small shoulder plane. get tuning!!

What I particularly liked was the finish. Mechanically it was very nice indeed...I think that is because it is an older one...1957...and I think the one I have bought is of the same run...or near to it.

Looking at some of the iterations of it, some, particularly the plated ones...look decidedly naff!

I'm looking forward to receiving it...

Jim

Not bad speed of arrival....and really impressed! The pictures on the FleaBay auction don't do it justice...it still has the machining on the faces!

....and apart from the shims which have some surface rust caused by capilliary action....

...in rather nice nick...including the iron which has loads left on to use...

Off to work now (typical!) so will try it out later and see what, if anything, needs fettling/tuning.

Well pleased! A lot of plane for the money! 8)

Cheers

Jim

Jim - looks like a good 'un. Shims were exactly the same on mine, but clean very easily and it suggests they have never been out. So maybe Rob was right??! i.e. not very useful. But once you tune it I think you will reach for it more often than its rather specialist form suggests. I love mine anyway, and at these prices its a lot of nice plane to have close by.

Does anyone know if the Clifton 3110 blade fits a 077a? I Found this 6 down on CHT

Oh yes, a Ray Isles in a 77a... if there is a tuning limit to a stock 77a it's the blade I think. So one of Mr Isles would surely make it an amazing little plane.

Funny enough...I was looking at the Clifton...and Iles ones on WSH...but I think I will whittle up a KT Tools one next time I fire up the kiln for your Slater Douglas.....I think with 3mm you may need both shims!

So today I followed our discussions and fettled up the iron....

It was a very round bevel(s), probably honed over many years on an oilstone by hand using diesel as a lubricant....

Anyway...it's sharp now and straight instead of a few degrees off...and ready for part one testing before I start more tuning as you suggest.

But for now, I am rather pleased with the results.....

...skims through English oak leaving a polished surface...rather nice indeed....

It's a full cut right across the mouth with no lateral adjustment necessary.

I like this early version of the 77A....for less than £30 it's a real bargain...

...and I think it looks really good too...even for a design which is 60 years old and often copied.

I can see you now, shaving a bit, then tossing a whispery shaving into the air and watching it float down.
The plane is great - just pay more attention to the stock, and stop doing that thing that strippers do with underwear (I saw a picture once). Fine in Devon maybe, but not over here eh??

HA!

I blame DC! If he hadn't started it, I wouldn't even have thought about it...but the lightness does have a direct relationship to the finish...baby bumishness of the stock...which I do occasionally look at!

When I'm actually planing stock in anger and not just test bits for plane fettling...I do spend far less time ejecting it into the atmosphere!

Thanks for putting me onto this little baby... 8)

Jim

Tommo - interested to see how you get on with the Preston. I considered one but for some reason that escapes me I felt the Record may have the edge (pun indeed). Garrett Hack rates the Preston highly. I think they are really quite similar. Let us all know how it turns out, and particularly how good the blade is.
