Hi,

I'm looking for either one of these planes (to be used, not collected). Don't know about how to purchase one...

Problem is I live in Montreal Canada. The good ones seem on your side of the pond. The new Lee Valley plough plane seems great, but it's not quite in my budget!

By the way, the Philly drawer bottom plane looks great! I wish I could make one of these.

Thanks for any advice.

Although Record was exported to Australia (where I live), like you, most of the examples of their planes (of all kinds) that I see become available are in the UK.

What I have done is to use eBay or the various old tool sellers and buy Record planes that are currently in the UK. Most sellers accept PayPal (on eBay) or credit cards (for the retail sellers) and Royal Mail surface rates are not too bad, if you are prepared to wait a couple of months (it would likely be less for Canada).

In the end, even if you don't like the plane you get, you can sell it in Canada and get the uplift caused by the rarity of the items there (same thing happens in Oz). :D

best of luck

Jeremy

PS IMHO if you are after 043s, try to get 3 of them - you can then permanently have one set up with each width of cutter ready for whatever groove you want to make. They are not so expensive that you can't justify the cost.

As Jeremy said, Ebay or some of the old tool sites are the best. Just make sure they ship international.
And thanks for the comments on my drawer bottom plane - very kind!
Philly :D
P.s. here's a recent one..

They regularly appear on Ebay from about £5 to £26 - depending on condition and luck?

Marples do a similar version too.

They do regularly appear on ebay and for a complete one with 3 blades I think £26 is an ok price :).
The only thing for you I guess would be delivery costs you should check with the seller first - you do not want to be stung!!

The really good examples seem to be snapped up by second hand tool dealers and usually cost a lot more - although delivery costs I am informed are usually reasonable - might be worth an email or 2 to find out what they have. Oldtools have a couple of 044's at around £65.

Looks like I should be after another one then :D

Cheers :D

Hi Charles,

I bought a 044 for $60 from my old tool dealer here in Ottawa. It was missing the long rods (dealer provided me with Stanley 45 rods for free, they fit) and the depth stop (I made one up). Not too bad a price.

Maybe you should check with La Mortaise (www.lamortaise.com), and post your request there. If that doesn't work, PM me and I can get you in touch with my tool pusher

I have no financial interest in all this, BTW.
