Good day.

I would quite like to get hold of a Record 050 combination plane. I am getting fed up with looking on Ebay - although these things regularly come up you never seem to get a straight answer to questions like "are there any parts missing".

Are there any dealers you would recommend? I have seen references to Tony Murland, but also comments that he is highly priced.

Thanks in advance,

Tony

Welcome to the forum, Tony - although I think we've "spoken" before? You made a nice bowsaw I think?

Anyway, dealers. I've a whole list of 'em on my site for a start. From my own observations I'd say Tony Murland is pricey but reliable. Tool Bazaar I've only ever bought books from, again a little pricey IMO but reliable. Not sure where Ray Iles has got to with his tool selling - he can be good, but he can also need a litttle prodding... Pennyfarthing Tools have proved good as have their prices. Doncaster, dunno. Secondhand Tools is good price-wise and Mr Dawson has been in the business forever and knows where to find stuff. Chris White, if he's got one, will be reasonably priced and he's a nice chap. The Toolbox at Colyton is quite dinky, but if they have one they're not daft about prices either. Trinders is for the infill lot. OldTools.co.uk are really rather pricey... Old Tools Feel Better has rather fallen off the radar so don't bother. Roy Arnold has given up (I should do something about that EDIT: Dunnit) but his business has been taken over by Mike Hancock of Classic Handtools. He's in a good tool spot and okay prices. Bristol Design I haven't dealt with for yonks, so I'll pass in hopes of someone else being able to comment, but they've been okay-ish in the past. Leeside, dunno. Classic Tools, dunno but appear to be a bit on the pricey side. Stag Tools, don't know. Bob's Tool Box, pricey I'm afraid. Peter Hanman, no idea.

It's a start, anyway. :D

Cheers, Alf

Alf, thank you. Fancy that being remembered. You're maybe referring to the old MSN UK Woodworking group, where I received advice on turning the handles.

I'll check out the dealers on your web page, and see how I get on. There are also a couple of planes on Ebay, but really Ebay is so horrible I'd rather just find someone with one for sale.

That's a bit of an open question for sellers who aren't otherwise tool dealers, though. They may well not know what should be there in the first place.

I got a nice #50 from Ebay.uk. The 50 is a relatively simple plane, not too many parts so even someone like myself who isn't too knowledgeable can see from the pics if anything is missing. I forget exactly how much I paid but it was around 16 pounds, a good deal. If I'm not mistaken you can download a manual from Roger Nixon's site (sorry, I don't have the link with me just now) to look at the parts, or maybe someone can post a pic so you can see what should be there. I could post one later today or tomorrow if you want.
Of course there's always a certain risk when buying off of Ebay. I understand that some people prefer to pay more and not worry about anything, but it can get a lot more expensive after buying a few tools this way.
Good luck!

That'll be it. Anyway hand tool makers are easy to remember; it's birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas that give me trouble... Ah, here it is, immortalised in BB's gallery of BugSaws. Lovely job.

Oops,
I just reread your post and saw you want a Record...mine's a Stanley UK. I definitely have a literacy problem when I read the forums...
Sorry!

Just looked at some of the web sites, and see what you mean about prices. Maybe I'll persist with Ebay a bit longer.

Knot too wurry, Fred, whee awl halve hour tribbles. Er, troubles. :D Funnily enough I just picked up a UK #50 NIB the other day, but not at nearly so gloatable a price. The 'Bay has really knobbled the chances of getting a good deal elsewhere these days. A dealer I know was describing a 1 1/2" paring chisel, Best London Pattern boxwood handle, straight sides but thin, the works (I was practically dribblin') and then finished off by saying he couldn't get the £40 it deserved so it'd go on the internet. :(

While you're here, anything you'd like me to add to the (short!) write up on your saw in my gallery?

Sadly, your post to Badger Pond is no longer available

Seeing as you asked, you could change "England" to "Scotland". I'm not actually a Scot myself, so no offence caused. The frame is made from Rowan - I don't know if that's a traditional wood for tools but I had some to hand. I've replaced the bailer twine with nicer string. Apart from those comments, its just straight from the official Bugsaw drawing.

On the initial question about old tool dealers, I have had very good experience both with Tony Murland and Pennyfarthing. Not only in ordering and delivery, but also in getting questions answered by email. Pennyfarthing doesn't get much comment on our side of the water, but in my experience they are exceptional. Their on-line listings never last long because the price is right--but they also say to call them since they have many more items than are listed.
