I have created a web page at my website featuring some of the recent work of students on the degree course I run at Leeds College of Art. The web page is at this link. Enjoy the visit if you drop in. Slainte.

I really like the last one there.

As a design statement, I think it's really innovative. Not sure I'd like to spend a lot of time sat in it tho

Nice work!

Some very nice, functional furniture there. It's clear on a couple of the pieces who some of the major influences are, without reading the text. Thanks for sharing this. :)

Having seen these in the flesh/wood I can vouch for their workmanship, having spent the last few months tripping over the huge former I was interested to see how the bench/chaise turned out.

My personal favourites were the striped maple and walnut chair, technically and visually brilliant and interesting to see it come together; the other stand out piece was the folding table, the pictures here really don't do it full justice as the grain and figure is stunning, I also think it was the best constructed and finished piece I saw, very high levels of attention to detail

Superb work Richard. Very impressive what young craftsmen can produce and some imaginative design work there too.

Impressive range of design projects from your students.

"The Tin Bath" and "Laminated Chair" are particularly innovative.

Though I would be delighted to own any of the pieces, my personal favourite is the Ash Dining Chair. The proportions are faultless and the craftsmanship is very evident in the photo.

Made me wish I was young again for just a moment, some interesting designs and you have a nice occupation to boot.

Thanks for the comments everyone. By the sound of it all of you that said something got something of interest out of that web page. Slainte.

Funny old world.

This series of posts got an amount of admiration and drooling over here and got an unenthusiastic response over there.

I'm not sure where you mean by 'over there', but I'm guessing it's a reference to another UK forum, one that started up after some ructions here.

Assuming that's correct, you're right; the work was less well received. I think everyone will understand if I say that my assessment of the merits of each piece varies considerably. Some I like aesthetically and some I don't. There are cases where I'm not overly fond of the end result yet still recognise the development of the individual that designed and made it.

I really don't expect a visitor to the student pages at my website to like every piece, but I do hope that visitors that investigate all the student and teaching pages at my website are able to develop some insight into the course, what we are trying to achieve as an educational institution and can perhaps see how that has aided a new furniture designer and maker's development. Slainte.

There are a couple that I admire the craftsmanship; but, find the design a bit uninspiring. Most of them I think are fantastic!

To be honest though all project posts over here generally get a positive response, even the bad stuff (the students work is excellent in my opinion), maybe over there they are not worried about offending?

Worryingly good stuff there - these uppity students going to blow all us old-timers away.
Loved the workmanship in the Maloofy rocker but the simple chair with curved legs near the beginning was my favourite

I applied to go to the leeds college of art, about 3 years ago, to do this type of course.
unfortunately, at the time, the workshops were being refurbished, and by the time they were ready, i had to change job, and relocate..
i really wished i could have taken part in this. The pieces presented are very impressive, even if i dont really like some of them (it's a subjective judgement) but the craftmanship is first class!
