Stanley 78 are best value by far. They are a bit unfashionable which makes them cheaper but they work very well.
I have a record 778, I think which may be like a Stanley 78. Can't fault it. Cuts great rebates, even in knotty redwood. Quieter and less messy than an electrified routing machine!

The 778 has a more secure fence (twin rails) and a proper screw depth adjuster.

In use makes no difference except takes just that bit longer to adjust.
But the Stanley has another major advantage (besides being cheapest) in that the fence support covers the unused part of the blade and saves your fingers from accidental cuts. Even the overpriced Veritas etc don't have this. Derek Cohen can tell you all about it!

I have the same Faithful model. It's OK but not brilliant - the depth stop and blade adjuster are functional but a bit rough. I notice that this pattern of plane still features in the Screwfix and Toolstation catalogues, so must still appeal to working joiners, but I much prefer an old skew bladed woodie.

Just a note on the Faithfull. In addition to some work on the iron the leading edge and underside of the lever cap need some work. They have a rough painted finish that causes long grain shaving to clog and compress. A coarse abrasive got rid of that issue quickly. The spur will also need a sharpen. Apart from that it seems just fine.

i didn't consider a new one

i guess for what i want it would be ok
i not want to spend loads as i have a router (electric thingy )that would do the same job
i am just trying to use hand tools for this project

must do a WIP i guess
