Hello all,

I have a query about the minimum size workspace you could run a small business from? I trade as a furniture restorer and am currently renting a space in a large workshop, aside from bench rental there is the fuel costs driving to and from the workshop each day (40 mile round trip). With the current economic climate i am strongly considering trying to set up something from home (which would be a dream) but this would mean building a shed out back. The property is rented so i don't want to go to mad. The workshop comprises the usual, a lathe, bandsaw, workbench and tablesaw.
Any views would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

My space is 18 feet square which is fine for my hobby usage but I think I would struggle with storage if I were pro.

First thing to check is that there is nothing in the deeds of the property, or in your rental agreement, that prevents you running a business from there, as it is a domestic dwelling.
Not doing so could be costly.

What ever your currently thinking, double it. Then be prepared for years of wishing you'd quadrupled it.

Hi I started off with a 600sqft workshop and was only just big enough but adequate if you were organized and tidy. I now have a 2000sqft workshop 65ft x 30ft and still need more room. I think you just adapt to whatever space you have. A double garage size 20ft X 20ft would be the minimum size i would suggest you need to start your own business.

I have just over 400 sq.ft. and I reckon I could run a small business from there, not that I'm planning to. Obviously depends greatly on the items you plan to make - I could do coffee tables and jewellery boxes but suspect staircases would be a struggle..

Cheers, Ed

Thanks for the input guys. I think i would stand a better chance if it was like a secondary workshop used for just polishing, i think that could work rather than going trying to go full tilt. Theres always the choice of renting something closer to home, that way i save on the diesel.
