Hi, All,I got a supply of all types of timber a few weeks ago .t was from ditches or (hedgerows) as is the proper name, anyway it was a mixed lot and some of it had been cut some 2 years ago. Most of it is about 4/6" in diametar a lot of it had been stuck in mud over a period of time . the newly cut ends I treated with a polybond mixture and a varnish gel for outdoor timber .After2 days the treated ends showed some small cracks appering while the mud covered ends are perfect. Question are we useing the wrong type of sealer, should we revert to nature and slap a plastering of mud on the cuts insted.
On one of the pieces which looked to be the longest that had the mud I cut 1/2" off the piece and there was not a sign of a crack or split,Itreated with a seeler and some small splits are beginning to show. So it's a bucket of muck for me tomorrow It costs nothing and I will see how it turns out. Regards Boysie.

Interesting observation :D
The idea of sealing the ends is to slow down moisture loss/drying to avoid splits - as long as it seals the end grain (and will continue to do so) there's no reason it shouldn't work (is there? :? )
Might try it out myself;as you said,it costs nothing!

Boysie, thanks for reminding me of days in the horticultural trade.... cuts, where branches were cut off, were often treated with 'gardener's grease' (a handful of muck!)

Hope it works for you
