It can get warm and destroy the velcro on some pads. Can, but not always.

It's because the hooks on the pad stick through the abranet mesh, then as you sand, it wears the hooks away, resulting in the hooks no longer gripping the sanding pads. Also explains why some people find they get strange swirl marks when using abranet without the pad saver on non Mirka sanders

I can highly recommend my DEWALT D26410 random orbital sander, its been great, cant fault it! Its not the cheapest, but as Cordy said just look/wait for a good deal. Its not exactly cheap in DM though!?

The Metabo is cheap on Amazon at the mo; probably find it cheaper elsewhere

The dewalt is a similar looking design to the Metabo, but i have no idea if its the same gubbins internally? Cant comment on the metabo, but the dewalt's been great!
