Awoke this morning with sickness, headache and diarrhoea  I think it was a dodgy take away. Luckily it mostly cleared by lunchtime and I ventured out to the workshop.

This is a bad pic but it shows the form.

The missus has been asking me for a chunky fruit bowl since I started turning so this is it. The wood was extremely dry and brittle and I couldn't completely eradicate the tearout.

I wasn't in the mood to muck about with it anymore so I went on to finish it. It beech I think? Just for JT it has a hole (knot) in the middle ;) and I finished it with Lemon Oil.

Nice one Tom , Push cuts ? or pull cuts ?

I think their is a special Finnish for fruit bowls to stop the acid in the fruit turning it the wood black

Cant remember what it called

Pull cuts on the outside. I do like this for shaping the outside, can't seem to get a consistent finish when pushing. I did use push cuts on the inside. Used the standard grind bowl gouge on the inside for the first time, after watching Mark use it so effortlessly yesterday. I need to get an HSS one. You got any Blister?

Are you thinking of Salad Bowl Finish? Or 'Wood Wipe' ? I think LO will be fine for this.

Good effort Tom.

Tear out can be a bu88er at times, though with all the different grain patterns in that piece of Beech, some awkward grain was all ways going to raise its head.

Its a pleasing shape, ideal for getting plenty of fruit in, well done.

? it's basically white spirit, don't think it would be my choice, could taint the fruit for some weeks if not months until it all evaporates.

Just a bit more detail than we needed there mate

Nice bowl though, and nice to see you finally got a go on the beast yourself.

OMG - that's 2 visits to the round side of the forum in as many days -
I think I need a lie down.

Just think what you could turn out if you were feeling well   This is lovely. Might copy that shape if you don't mind.

Copy away LW.

I was nice to be able to stand in front of the lathe and turn. Much more comfortable.

However, sods law, this morning I grabbed a broom to sweep up and PING out went the back. So I'm laid up yet again.

Mark I take it the missus was pleased with your creation?
