Im trying to send a parcel to someone in the US but the address I have for him looks more like a telphone number than an address is that usual with US addresses? Its a Po Box number in Effort PA and from there on the address is all numbers ( a string of 15 numbers). I don't really want to post his address in an open forum as Im sure you can appreciate but any advice would be welcome.
Thanks
Mike

Mike,

I am not sure what the string of 15 numbers are for, as ZIP CODES (like our post code) are usually 5 or 6 numbers long.

The PA stands for Pennsylvania, so if you don't get the information you need here (although i am sure you will), why not try emailing the PA Postal Services and ask them if you have the correct address.

Cheers

Mike

Thanks Mike
That makes sense the string of numbers in divided up into groups 5 then 3 /3 /4 So Im guessing that the 5 is the Zip code and the 3 sets of numbers or so are a tel number. I could just email the chap himself but was hoping to suprise him. Having said that Its more important that the package gets through than that its a suprise :)
Cheers Mike

Mike,

There is also some form of extended ZIP code of the form ZZZZZ-XXXX where ZZZZZ is the normal zip code and the XXXX part defines the area to a higher precision. Don't know if its is used on private addresses but I have often seen it on business addresses. This might be what some of your extra digits are for.

But I am sure that our American members will be online soon to help out.

Andrew

Mike,

I am an American, living in Scotland. 15 digits sounds like a lot, unless that includes the p.o. box. i.e. sometimes the p.o. box is repeated in the zip code. Andrewm is correct. Usually the zipcode has five numbers, indicating the town and then a four digit number denoting the exact location. Usually (if I remember correctly) if it's a p.o. box that number will be repeated in the four digits. I appreciate your desire for confidentiality, but I could probably give a more informed answer, if I see the full address. I know you don't know me from Adam, but if you PM me with the details, I promise I won't and have no reason to use the information for any other use than to help you. I'm thinking as well, sometimes large organisations in the U.S. have something like a barcode at the end of the address. Does your friend work for a large organisation, and is he using his work address? Another thing to think about, some p.o. boxes will not accept parcels.

Why don't you post it but change a few digits, so that people can see roughly what you mean?

It lloks like the ZIP code for Effort, PA is 18330. You might have four digits after that to make the ZIP+4 code but my guess is those last digits in the format you state are a phone number. Although there might be more than one area code, the one I found in a quick search is 610. If you have that and another seven digits, you have the phone number.

The format for the address should look something like

1234 Anystreet Road
Effort, PA 18330

Dave that must be the answer the first set of digits for the second set of numbers if you see what I mean is 610 - so as you say that must be the phone number. Strange that he uses a PO box but also gives out his phone number. Im guessing with a PO box that you dont need the Zip code plus 4 cos the mail will just go to the post office for collection.
Thanks Mike

You're correct. The 4 extra digits identify the house or building. For example, if you add 2000 to my ZIP code, the mail carrier could deliver that package to my house with no other information.

Actually, you said it was a PO box so the address would be more like:

P.O. Box 1234
Effort, PA 18330
