I was looking at this block plane made by Qiangsheng for Dakota when they had their 10% off and free P&P sale recently. It was £29.95, so therefore would have been £27 delivered, give or take. But it was out of stock at the time so they wouldn't let me put an order in? Strange I thought, but I'll just order it when it's back in stock. "Went back to see if they had it back in stock, it's now £59.95! WTF?" edit: this is because it was in the sale @ £29.95 and now it's back to it's usual £59.95. I should have looked more closely.

I could almost start to think the people who sell these things have read our public witterings about what a good bargain they were!

There was nothing stopping you ordering at the lower price - I did. I am prepared to wait until they restock, so long as they honour the price I bought it at.

I'm with Knappers - last week, I placed a small order with them online, which included two items that were out of stock. Yet, I was still able to go through the checkout and pay for these items at the discounted price. It remains to be known when they'll be available again but, I know that not all companies have worked over the past weekend.

Did you try to place your order by phone? You must still have some right to be able to purchase the plane at the discounted price? Someone else will know for sure. Might be worth contacting Rutlands again - some people have had success in identical situations, believe it or not...! ;-)

Trouble is that, on this forum, negative experiences and opinions seem to outweigh the good about this particular company... :p

I tried to order it when it was cheaper and it kept saying 'Basket Empty', so I assumed that it wouldn't let me order as it was out of stock. I know this isn't normally the case with most websites, which seemed strange to me, but I didn't think much into it. Oh well. And yeah Rutlands get a lot more negative reports than positive, by a LONG way! :)

Cheers_Dan.

matthew (workshop heaven) has them at 64.50 anyway so chances are that rutlands was loss leading on a small order of promo stock if they were offering them at 25 odd notes.

giventhe increase in rutlands price - id pay the extra fiver and buy from matthew now who has excellent customer service and planes in stock

And you get the improved version + both low and standard angle blades. Bargain!

I'll tell you WT*, the plane you refer to at 29.99 was in the sale. It hasn't doubled in price it has only returned to its original price. If you looked more you'd see more. Also is there really any need for profanity?

Not my intention to offend anyone Richard, sorry. And if that's the case then I seem to have overlooked it, my bad. But it's not really standard practice to have a sale on-top of another sale so I guess I didn't think to look. I'm pretty annoyed that their site wouldn't let me order it either, because I've read good reviews on 'said' plane and at £27 it's a bit of a bargain.

And IMHO there's no need to be so short with people when they've made a simple mistake, I didn't swear at you. _Dan.

Interestingly, Axminster have bumped up their prices since yesterday - one of their morticers has gone up 20%, for example. Looks like since they have had to deal with the VAT rise, they've taken the 'opportunity' to slap on a bit more at the same time.
Overall, a basket of three machines (I was interested in what they'd do with the VAT rise, so checked yesterday) went up 10%. Shoulda bought things about three years ago, before we all got poor! Looking back at prices mentioned in this forum you can really see the effects of inflation.

I think I will be placing an order from Workshop Heaven pretty soon for some Narex Chisels and I will get the block plane at the same time. I've never dealt with Matthew, but heard many good things, I'd much rather buy from an independent retailer who knows what he's on a bout and has good customer relations.

On the chisels: I'm going for a set of 10 Narex Cabinetmaker's Chisels. Has anyone got any experience with these? Are they a much finer tool than the standard bevel edged chisels that Narex do?

Yeah Blister started a thread here warning everyone of the rises, I hadn't got my act together and moved some funds that I needed to to place any order with Axy. My shopping basket was about £1800, I'm REALLY not looking forward to finding out what it is now. Just one item (their big cyclone extractor) has gone up by about 14.4% (I think if my maths is right)!

So it looks like some company's are using the VAT rise to cover price increases :?

I just ordered a item that was £1389.50
The 2011 price will be £1589.82

so it looks like its MORE than a 2.5 % VAT rise

So my £1800 potential order is now about £2052! Might have to revise a few things.
