Hi, i'm new to this forum. I'm trying to make a puzzle box I did the plans. The fact is that I don't know wich wood or even wich tools to buy. Could someone help me ???

If you search for a member called Brucio, he used to design and make puzzle boxes with a scroll saw and plywood. I don't think he's been active on this forum for a while, though.

Thanks gill I saw his work on his website it looks great but i'm trying to build a box made from higher quality wood. So I can sell the box after.

I bought my wife a proper Japanese puzzle box a few years ago for xmas as she had always wanted one. Cost a fortune but when it arrived the craftsmanship was superb and clearly worth the price. The actual mechanism seems to be made from balsa or similar type wood and is cut to the absolute finest tolerance possible. The outside (yosegi) is actually a specialisation in itself and made by a different person to the box maker. Suffice to say, I have given up all hope of being able to make one to those tolerances myself, and still get it down from the shelf and marvel at the craftsmanship occasionally!

I have everything I need for tools, I think. I have a band saw a table saw and a couple of other things. I was just wondering if I need some precision tools. I have my plans the only the only thing missing is the type of wood

Seriously, I would use plywood or MDF; if you want it to look nicer, then use veneer.

I made a fairly simple little puzzle box out of oak a little while back. Sometimes it works fine, a few months later it's completely jammed shut. The tolerances required for puzzle boxes leave practically no room for expansion, so try to pick a material which doesn't expand.
