I'm looking to buy some pretty plain timber to build bed frames (for loft beds) I'm looking for 6x2, 2x2 and some 18mm ply sheets. I'm getting very frustrated with supplier who don't put their prices online and whereby I have to build my list and then send off for a quote.

Can anyone suggest one or more suppliers that can provide me with pricing online and will deliver to the south coast. I just want to be able to do a quick comparison of a few places and then order.

Alsford Timber have an online shop but you'll always get better prices by going in to one of the branches as a trade customer.

You're not far from me (t'other end of the Solent) so here are some potential suppliers,

-English Woodlands Timber, great timber yard but very expensive delivery, I've had delivery costs as high as £80 on their own lorries.

-Surrey Timbers, another great timber yard, delivery costs vary but can be around £40 a load, cheaper if they can combine deliveries or use a courier for smaller drops.

-S&L Hardwoods, furthest away but cheapest delivery costs!

All these will do Poplar, Alder, plain off-white Sycamore at keen prices, in other words the sort of stuff you're looking for, but S&L are the only one of these three that will combine sheet goods. After that you're looking at all the usual suspects, Timbmet, Robbins, TP, Tylers, Yandles, Moss & Co, some deliver to South Hampshire at decent rates, and some who won't deliver here at all.

Good luck!

Do they do online quotes and prices though?

I just want to buy stuff and not to have to make send off for quotes.

Thanks for the input so far.

If you can set yourself up with a trade account it will make a difference to the price too. All these yards offer differing price advantages primarily based on volume purchase but they also favour account holders. Joe public are in a special category for being rogered!

Most of these companies don't do online pricing because what you pay is very dependent on who you are and how much you want. You either have to go to the yard and ask or put in requests for quotes or just go with a convenient supplier and accept you won't necessarily get the very cheapest price.

I'm happy to sacrifice some cost for convenience. Basically I just want to go to one site click and order all the items I want and then pay. Like I do with every other online system! :)

But timber yards aren't like every other online system I'm afraid. They're not run by savvy internet generation people and they're just not in that kind of whizzy/snappy online world. The last bastion of brown overall's in some senses....four candles!
