Hi .. From a British web site there was a reference to "chipboard". I haven't received a more specific definition and hope you could help. Here in the Colonies we have a pressboard of medium sized particles called underlayment which is much more coarse than MDF.
Can you help me decipher if that's what they were referring to? Not allowed to post image, sorry.
Thanks, Zene

Chipboard is made from compressed and glued chippings sometimes with oher bits of detrious. Much more coarse than MDF, it's clear what its made of, try a Google image search for chipboard and you'll get a good idea and should be able to tell if its the same as your underlayment.

Thanks guys. I purposely left out "particle board" in hopes, and you gave me what I needed.
Thanks, Zene

I think common parlance is one thing, but the industry has a very wide range of "boards made from bits".

It's a good thing - it uses wood that would otherwise be waste.

Guys ... what I found here in the States was an industrial particle board of 25 mm. That thickness is what I'm looking to get. Being industrial I wonder if your particle board of that size is the same? The density if of primary importance. If so, is there a site you could recommend that would give me the density so I can be reasonably sure that is what the author originally tested.
Lesson to all of us ... be damned specific on anything you post on line. I'm terrible at not doing.

There are differing qualities and densities, low, medium, and high densitiy. It comes with a variety of glues , and versions that have fine densely packed and glued particles, often laminated, to versions that have course particles that are much cheeper. So it's not easy to give an exact answer.

Many of these verities are are not easy for the average user to buy.
