After doing my latest Yew piece with all the inclusions in,i used the Grip a disc sanding system (velcro fixing)to do some of the work, and fitted the attachment into my leccy drill to power sand.
But as soon as the disc hit the edge of the hole the sanding disc would come off
So what i would like to know,is there a sanding attachment that i can fit in the leccy drill that permanently holds the sanding disc and won't come off :?:
I know i can hand sand, but it won't give the same finish as a power sander, just lazy really :D

Hi Paul, I don't power sand things with surfaces that are uneven like the one you've just done.
1 If you get the disc caught as can happen it could be nasty
2 The different thicknesses of the wood mean that you are bouncing a lot and thias can cause different pressures and again cause problems
3 the reason you mentioned. The discs don't work on a pad with this sort of thing

I find that I can get a better finish using Abranet working through the grades. I can feel the wood and as long as I keep my hand flat holding the net with my thumb it is a lot safer IMHO. It doesn't really work out any slower either as using a power sander you still have to hand finish the bits the sander doesn' reach.

I also polish with as shoe brush as this gets into the cracks. issue ends up all over the place. Also going to get one of those little 'shaving brushes' Mark recommended

Hope this helps

Pete

Thanks Tusses/Pete.
I should point out that i was only power sanding with the lathe off, rotating the piece as i did,and locking it off using the indexing lock.
I was also only using the Gripa disc on the inside center area and the outside, which did work fine.I was using the off cuts of the disc which acts like a flap sander.
I have used the stick on discs in the past but found that they rip too easily

I've only ever tried then on flat surfaces (cars) !

what about the flap wheels ? you can get dome / mushroom shaped ones I think

If you have one of those old Black'n'Decker rubber sanding pads you could prob make up your own.... but it looks a bit aggressive to me... even with higher grit value

I'm going to bang on again about a 'light touch'... my discs only fly off when I get too carried away ...and they're diamond shaped velcro offcuts... slightest exuberance and they're airborne

Just foundThis at Screwfix.
Does anyone know if it is any good, for the money

1st impression is it's a bit pricey for what it is ! looks like the sort of thing you would see on poundland or pound stretcher !

for a pount - I might give it a go - for £13 i'd give it a miss !

Graham i did try all roads using the discs and off cuts, and you are right a light touch was best, but as soon as i tried to move it up and down or side to side it just flew off.
I also agree about the price of that Oakly sander

Paul, you said you were using the grip-a-disc offcuts, these would be the last things I would use on an irregular or intermittent piece. The wings are by their nature the very best design to catch on any edges.

I would think you would get on much better with regular discs, I very rarely 'Power sand' but do use friction sanding with the piece rotating even on irregular shapes and like Pete says used with care regarding angle of attack works much the same as hand held Abranet but without the risk of circumferential scoring.

Chas.
I have used the method That Pete describes in the past, and it does work, but my problem with the last bowl was because the marks i was trying to get out were near the top inside edge i seemed to be bouncing over them.Wasn't using Abranet though, must get some.
I did finally manage to get the marks out using the Grip a disc pads, but because of them coming off took ages.
Looks like i will just have to stick with ol Percy :D

I'm afraid he has been encouraged by Graham for so long now that he is just about impossible to avoid when you get those little niggles.
